Review - Hammer House of Horror Live
We visited Hammer House of Horror - Live: The Soulless Ones not quite knowing what to expect, We had seen it advertised as ‘Immersive Theatre’ but we weren’t quite sure what that was going to mean. There isn’t much in the way of a description on the website beyond what the story entails, but it really is helpful to visit this event by leaving any preconceptions of scare attractions at the door.
The Soulless Ones is much like a choose your own adventure book. Once we arrived at the venue, we redeemed our tickets and we were given a long black cloak to wear. It's an intriguing start and gives an explanation of how you can move around the building unnoticed by the characters within. We were introduced to the story at the beginning in a well presented opening, and then we were given permission to explore the building at our own pace, experiencing different scenes and encountering new and interesting characters.
The story that was presented, was outstanding, we felt more emotion for these characters than we often feel reading a good book, or watching a movie. Credit must go to the actors for the delightful and dedicated performance they gave, we have never felt so connected to a story in a scare attraction than we did at this event. You could walk into any room and instantly become gripped into the scene that was being played out, and this was all down to the presence of the cast, even whilst we were walking from scene to scene we would bump into them performing and adding little snippets of information to the overall story which we thought was a nice touch. Our one gripe with using this format is that it’s impossible to experience everything in one night, to really know everything you’ll have to visit multiple times.
The atmosphere of the venue is outstanding and the attention to detail in the sets, lighting and sound is something to be proud of. We're not sure if some of these effects are triggered, but it was particularly creepy to walk into a room and hear whispering voices start talking around us as our group explored a room full of jars that were filled with strange liquids and unnerving objects. There was genuinely so much to look at within the rooms that we had to give up searching for new things, else our group would have missed the story. But believe us when we say there is something to find in every drawer and cupboard. The house isn’t your typical jump scare haunted house, but it has enough tension throughout to really hold the suspense for the evening.
Overall, The Soulless Ones is an extremely gripping piece of theatre and worth a visit to anyone that has an interest in theatre or horror. It’s no surprise that Hammer who have created some of the best gothic horror films, have pulled off such an interesting concept with such dedication and care. This is a truly unique event that we suggest you really don’t want to miss.
Hammer House of Horror - Live: The Soulless Ones runs from 3rd October – 31 st October at Hoxton Hall in London.
