Review - Halloween Nightmares: The Circus Edition
This summer it was announced that something big was happening in the Netherlands. A new Haunted House would come to Utrecht, claiming to be 1000x times better than the Halloween Fright Nights at Walibi Holland and to be the biggest Haunted House in the Benelux region (that's the whole Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg!)
When the opening date came close, some of the details were scaled down a little bit to become a 45 minute haunted house with approx 1.5 km of walking. But intrigued to see what it was all about, we visited the Halloween Nightmare at the Wall in Utrecht - a big shopping center outside of the city.
On arrival we were greeted by a nice red carpet and as we arrived late there was just a small waiting line. Turns out that the owner says that they have a maximum of 100 people a hour, to enhance the experience. As it is - they have already sold out several nights.
This theme for this show is The Circus. When you walk in you see a bit circus tent setup inside and along the way we got to visit the circus of Wally the Clown (you get the joke about the Wall shopping mall?) Our tour included a visit to all the things you would expect from a circus - lions, clowns, and loads of other fun circus stuff. There was even a ball pit inside the maze that we had to climb through! Other scenes included a couple of tunnels we were forced to crawl through, some areas where we were locked in corridors until they allowed us out and a big fair scenes at the end!
Overall the theming was nicely done. There was a good feel for detail, with many wall paintings, and props throughout. The rooms also varied a lot in size which gave great variety. As for the actors, sadly they were a mix of good and bad. Some were really great, and knew exactly what they were doing, either telling a story or giving a great scare. But sadly, there where a couple of actors that really did not have a clue what they where doing. It's a shame - as the house has been designed well with some really clever hiding spots for the actors - they just weren't using them effectively. A small gripe for opening night and easily fixed.
In conclusion Halloween Nightmares: The Circus Edition, is a really fun haunted house. At 15 Euro, our walking time was about 25 minutes instead of the 45 minutes advertised, but we had a great time. As it is - it's a fun addition to the ever growing scare attraction scene in the Netherlands.
