Halloween Adventure at Stockeld Park
Scary Fright Nights, Stockeld Park's scare attraction returns for 2014, where three attractions are transformed into terrifying zones, Hex in the Hollows, Dead End & Alienation. We really enjoyed this event in 2013 and so were looking forward to see what this year would bring - especially as all three mazes were advertised as new..
Hex in the Hollows
This great, story telling scare walk is fun and frighting for people of all ages. Once we got to the forest we where told about witches who had taken over the forest and the witch hunter was sending us in to get information about them . Along the way we experienced a number of good (as well as bad) witches and we were cleverly introduced to the story of local legend Mother Shipton. By the end, the witches were ready to "raise the beast" which gave us one last scare as we exited the attraction. This was the tamest of the three mazes in design but we actually enjoyed it more than Dead End.
Dead End
This maze uses a real hedge maze, and as such there are some real dead ends while trying to find our way out. With the roaming characters and the confusion about how to get out, this should have been scary but very little seemed to happen throughout. It didn't help that we bumped into an actor who was trying to start a chainsaw and just panicked when he saw us (aren't they supposed to be scaring us and not the other way round?) It turns out he was the only actor we saw, and we just walked out the exit with no scares. It's such a shame as in 2013, the maze was full of actors and was really well done .
Alienation
This maze was the star of the show and was easily the most intense of the night. The maze itself was full of jump scares and for those brave (or stupid) enough - you could go through on your own if we wanted. Of course, we jumped at the chance! Once inside, the maze was complete blackness with us fumbling to find a way out until the "aliens" started scaring us and lighting up the path. It was particularly unnerving having to walk towards the illuminated aliens in the dark, knowing that they would attack at any point. As such, this short maze seemed to go on for a very long time.
Overall we still really liked Stockeld Park's Halloween event but were disappointed by our lacklustre visit through Dead End. All in though - it is a great family night out with some great scares - we look forward to returning in 2015.
