Ghosthunter Review
Ghosthunter is a brand new show created by Visible Fictions, that has just opened in Scotland. Based in a studio complex on the outskirts of Glasgow, the venue doesn't appear to lend itself to an immersive horror experience, but damn - this show packs a punch!
The story is simple - we were invited to take part in a ghost hunt, but the main protagonists weren't available. Therefore we ended up with an enthusiastic trainee who tried to show us around the allegedly haunted house. Our host was clumsy, yet enthusiastic, and soon started to tell us of the history of the house we had just entered.
And what a house! It was clear that no expense had been spared on the set, as it genuinely felt like we were in an old building, and the attention to detail throughout was outstanding. The walls were adorned with real wood paneling, and each room we explored (be it a bedroom, kitchen or living room) felt totally believable, due to the detailed theming throughout. In fact it felt so real during the 2 hour experience that we sometimes forgot we were in an industrial estate near Glasgow airport!
The main show itself was an intriguing immersive experience that included escape room elements, some sustained tension and a number of genuinely terrifying scares that left most of the group screaming!
What worked so well was that at different times we were sent out into the darkness to discover the secrets of the house. Armed with just some unique technology (ghost detectors and the like) we were left to explore many of the rooms in a quest to try and find out the secrets of the family that lived there, and the ghost (ghosts) that lived in the house.
We loved the way the show mixed the jump scares with the more psychological horror and over the course of the event, the whole group was on edge - not knowing what was coming next, but when the scares came - they hit so hard that everyone in the group was screaming (whether they were in the room or not!)
By the time we hit the finale, we were so overwhelmed by the tricks and effects around us that we were actually kind of pleased when the show ended. Two hours is a LONG time to stay on edge and the professional crew did an amazing job of ramping up the tension throughout.
Of course - we cant say too much, without giving away spoilers, but the live actor involved in the main show was amazing. She did a really good job of leading us through our discoveries, especially as most of the time during the missions she could only hear what we were doing. She was ably supported by a dedicated behind the scenes tech team, who helped to create a uniquely terrifying show that genuinely has to be experienced to be believed, Ghosthunter is totally original and unique, and deserves to be seen by more people! Book now before it sells out.
