Fresh, Live and Dead by The Improsarios
The Improsarios are a talented band of comedians and actors that have been working the comedy circuit for several years. Using suggestions thrown from the audience, the team pull together a theatrical production with multiple characters and scenes which can range from something deeply hysterical to something much darker.
Fresh Live and Dead is their latest concept which attempts to create improvised horror theatre which is designed to thrill and scare the audience. It’s not an easy task but one which they have managed to pull off really well.
We first saw the show as part of a double bill with the brilliantly scary As Ye Sow before it headed to the Edinburgh Fringe in July. With just three of the main cast on set and NO props, the audience were asked to suggest potentially scary things. The diverse scenarios included “London traffic during the Olympics” “the real content of a Gregg’s sausage roll” and "The Great Muppet Massacre." (which drew a massive cheer!). These were just random ideas from the audience and any show could easily be completely different. The cheers from the audience showed that the Muppet massacre was clearly the favourite concept!
Within seconds, the team proceeded to play out a funny, tense and sometimes scary horror story around a possessed puppet that was killing children, operators and anyone who came in contact with it. Scenes would change fluidly and each scene would open with one of the character’s setting the tone for the other actors. As with any improvisation there was always an element of trying to “catch” the other one out and some of the scenes and situations were as funny as they were bizarre
The interesting thing to note is that the “horror play” we saw would have been good enough if it was scripted. It had real moments of tension and fear which is all so amazing that the whole thing was being made up on the spot. The actors were believable in all the many characters they played.
With improvisation you are always guaranteed to see something different and we would have loved to have seen a show based on a different scenario and see how they cope with that. It's not to everyone's taste but if you think Fresh Live and Dead is something you would enjoy, then The Improsarios will be doing more improvised horror during several upcoming dates in London.
