Review - Hop Farm Freak Week Sindulgence
The Hop Farm is a great setting for putting on a scary show. Secluded in Rural Paddock Wood, the dark lead up to the entrance really sets the mood from the start. Having visited the Freak Week Festival in the past, we thought we knew what to expect - ie a scream park style attraction. What we got was far different and more immersive....
We were met by three rough, bearded men They were raggedy dressed, with dusty top hats and long black jackets, armed to the teeth with automatic weapons and rag-wrapped shotguns. One of them with a cigarette poking out of a cigarette holder, smoking like a true gentlemen. Another holding what looked like a bible, complete with a white collar.
They engaged with us for a whole and then in groups of twenty we were called up and told to line up by the door. What then followed was a chaotic but controlled experience that involved some crawling, periods of complete darkness, and a lot of running.
At one point during the proceedings we were actually given guns! After a short military operation to take out one of the bad guys, we entered a room full of weapons and each told to grab one, press a button on the side, and reload.
This was a little chaotic and a good job they were not real guns as everyone would be dead from trigger happy punters. We followed, and soon the mayhem started and everyone let loose on things in the dark. Red lights were flashing everywhere and the sounds of bullets flying, got everyone engaged and on their toes. The men thought they were Rambo and the women… well they thought they Rambo too!. This was great fun and we ran round searching round every corner and checking every door (and shooting anything that moved!)
From inside to outside, the shooting mayhem continued and we went on ducking and diving and searching everywhere we could in the dim light. We managed to snag ourselves a hostage, which we had to look after and take with us, protecting her from the evil, weapon wielding maniacs outside.
The shooting section is only part of the whole experience and once we had returned our weapons we headed for a big finale that presented a tense face off between the military, the maniacs and us. After the exhilaration of the guns, the end scene was a way to calm everyone down and finish the story. We might have preferred a bit more action here as the rest of the experience had been really exciting.
The whole evening was very high energy, great fun, quite physical and a slight mental challenge. It did lack some zest at the end, as the highlight of the night was running around with the guns, but as whole, the event was really well executed and unlike anything we have done befoe.
