Fort Amherst 2015
We have been visiting Halloween Horrors at Fort Amherst for years and have always been impressed with the sheer panic that the attraction creates in its audience. Using such large groups at at time, the tour consists of a number of different scenes that follow a certain formula. The audience enter a room, some tension is built up and then a pack of creatures (zombies, werewolves etc) attack the group. The atmosphere in these scenes are usually the closest we have ever experienced to mass hysteria and the actors are brilliant at moving round the group and attacking everyone. The problem is – after visiting so many times – we feel that this formula is now getting a little bit predictable, and although it is scary being mauled and manhandled by the creatures, there is no real surprise to what is going to happen.
The other thing that didn’t help this year was the presence of a number of very drunk people on the tour. Halloween Horrors at Amherst is, by its very nature, one of the most physical Halloween attractions in the UK and some of these drunk people were arguing back and being mouthy instead of enjoying the event for what it was. Many attractions in the UK have an alcohol usage policy but it seemed that these people slipped through the net. Its a shame as they really put an edge on our evening. We understand the Fort wanting to make alcohol sales to boost the charity coffers but maybe this should be reserved until after the tours. It would certainly be easier for the actors not to have to deal with idiots and would make the tours more enjoyable for everyone else.
Its such a shame, as the volunteers who put on this event are highly passionate about it, and put on the sort of show that most professional acting troupes would struggle to beat. It's high energy, scary and fun and the Fort itself is an absolutely stunning location - it's just a shame that each year we seem to see a little less of it. For the 30th anniversary we were expecting something truly stunning - sadly we left a little disappointed.
