Ebenezer's Haunted Tower - Warwick Castle
Warwick’s main haunted attraction, Ghosts Alive has run every summer for the last four years and finished its season at the end of November. So, with their Victorian Christmas event coming up, Warwick decided that they could also do a seasonal makeover of the Ghost Tower and the creative guys at Sweet Dreams were given the task of creating a temporary Christmas attraction.
What better subject therefore than Dickens’ famous story “A Christmas Carol”?
We experienced the attraction on its opening weekend and it was clearly obvious that a lot of work had been put into it. Unlike other recent shows that took a week or so to get into their stride, Ebenezer’s Tower is a hit from the start and has been receiving rave comments from guests. It is testament to its appeal and success that on a cold, wet and very windy day, the queue never got less than 30 minutes!
The show starts with a visit to Ebenezer Scrooge who starts to hear strange sounds around him. From this point onwards we are with him at all times as he is visited and tormented by his old partner Marley and the three ghosts of Christmas past, present and yet to come. All the ghost entrances are timed to perfection to create screams throughout the audience and as the crowd moves from room to room the apprehension about what may happen next is palpable.
It should be mentioned here that the acting talent in the attraction is first class and everyone was able to project their scripted story perfectly while holding the attention of guests AND providing decent scares throughout. But then we would expect them to be good – look closely under the stage make up and you’ll be surprised who you might see – The Policeman from Alton’s Field of 1000 Screams, or Bozo the clown and the demonic bellboy from Room 13. In their new Dickensian guises they are virtually unrecognisable from their previous incarnations, which really is a credit to the acting skills on display.
From beginning to end, Ebenezer’s Tower tells a compelling story that is incredibly well acted and very believable. On each trip through we jumped and screamed as much as we did on our first go and always ended up tumbling out the final door laughing hysterically!
Whilst at Warwick Castle we took in the rest of the attractions including the fun ice-skating trail through the gardens, the original steam fair as well as the many exhibits in the castle itself.
So if you are looking for something to do in the run up to Christmas and fancy getting a little scared along the way – we would recommend going to the Castle for some seasonal fun.
On opening weekend – the intrepid Dr Haze from The Circus of Horrors experienced Ebenezer’s Tower for himself. After his experience he said “I love Warwick castle and thought the Ebenezer’s Tower was a good idea and generally well acted. Its never easy when you are working with restraints of small buildings & small children but I liked it & wish all the guys well.“
