Dudley Canal Horror
Nothing beats visiting an attraction that's a little bit different from the norm, so on a cold and misty night we attended one of Dudley Canal Trust's brand new horror nights. We had been wondering what on earth could be so sinister and dark about a boat ride and it wasn't long until our questions were answered. Within a few seconds of opening the car door we were greeted by three relentless actors, tearing through the car park and chasing us through to the entrance - the perfect hint of what was to come. Once inside, more roaming actors lined the sides of the canal providing a few well executed startle scares as we waited patiently to be called onto our trip on the canal.
Once aboard, the story was set by our enthusiastic tour guide, who mentioned that the electrics had been playing up all day. No sooner had we entered the tunnel than the lights onboard began to flicker and strobe, eventually plunging us into darkness. This was simple but effective and had many of the boat's passengers shrieking in anticipation of what was to follow. The journey had us exploring various caverns and tunnels populated by actors. In fact, the sheer number of actors to be found in this attraction was really impressive.
The lighting used throughout the tour really highlighted the natural ambience of the caves which lend themselves perfectly to this kind of haunt. The attraction feels very much like a long haunted hayride style attraction, but with one difference - because of the nature of the setting it would be unsafe for the acting team to board the barge. Where you might expect this to be less scary it has the reverse effect. The scares are a little more creative and you literally have no idea where they will come from next and on a few occasions we were left guessing which of the silhouettes were about to come to life! We also felt that there was a nice mix of pure scares, and set scenes, bound together by the eerie booming voice of our 'spirit guide', who seemed hell-bent on petrifying our group with his tales of the macabre from within the caverns.
One of the key scenes from our trip was a cleverly choreographed UV puppetry show which was beautiful to watch play out. Although we have seen similar effects used before, we've never seen it executed so perfectly as the movements flowed in such an enchanting way. Our only criticism from this was that, although wonderful to watch, it didn't have a finale. We felt it was building up to something, and were waiting on edge to see the big ending that would send us back on our journey shreiking with both fear and amazement, but it was very anti-climactic, winding down slowly as the boat pulled away.
Dudley Canal Horror is the perfect night out, which combines a great mix of scares, comedy and story telling. Although we'd question the event having an 18's and over age restriction, it was a hell of a lot of fun, and something we would strongly recommend to anyone looking for something different. It's evident from the moment you set foot on site that the whole team are enthusiastic and passionate about providing a quality experience from start to finish.

Yeah I really liked this, the werewolf coming out the tunnel when you first go in gave me and my misses a bit of a jump.
Liked the fact that it wasn`t just a 20 minute ride and it was a nice long story and the caves were amazing. The other people on the boat made it a really fun experience.
The Uv bit was good although it wasn`t scary, just really clever how they did it.
I agree with the guy above, it could`ve done with something to happen at the end so it felt like it finished on a high
