Cursed
We thoroughly enjoyed last year's Cursed event at Cressing Barns, but unfortunately the venue weren't as impressed with us and so for 2013, Cursed found itself homeless. Over the summer, the event looked like it may not even happen this year at all especially as it was sold off to new owners and was effectively "homeless". Fortunately, at the last minute a new venue was found in Basildon but with just 5 weeks to build the massive show we weren't sure if it would be up to the standards of other events. How wrong we were!
This event unlike others we have attended is different due to it being one continuous walk containing seven Mazes in total with two scare zone style areas containing characters. We were informed that there were over 70 live actors at this event.
WorkChop!
This is the start of the walk and the first maze of the night . We were greeted by the owner of the abattoir who told us about the “business” he runs with his family and asks if anyone is vegetarian! (apparently it’s best not to be). This maze is a very fast carnage of body parts and workers that seem to have forgotten the food hygiene standards ratings of today (it’s a little dirty). It was a great start - fun and chaotic and once chased from this maze we were quickly ushered onto the next!
CarnEvil!
This maze is full of clowns and is set in an old barn with low hanging wooden beams, giving the clowns somewhere to “hang around”. The maze although smaller than the Workchop was a great full on experience with the actors working very fast and up close. Once we had left CarnEvil we had to navigate the next stage of the course via glow sticks which made for a dark and atmospheric walk.
Mausoleum
From the outside this appeared to be a very small building but we could hear a lot of screams from within. With a small introduction we were left to wander round the casket/tomb in the middle of the room. Unfortunately for us there were no rules to this room and we were free to move either way - generally trying not to get lost (did we say that it was pitch black inside?). The sudden scare in this room left everyone screaming in the dark!
Squeeze and Zombie Run
The Squeeze is apparently the longest in the UK and is clearly not for the claustrophobic. It is an extremely tight inflatable tunnel and we really did start to wonder if we would make it out the other side! Once through we were left to navigate through a wooded area with a number of characters attacking us. Although not signposted we think this was the Zombie run (we had been expecting another maze but there was definitely nothing else between Squeeze and Pig Pen
Pig Pen and Creepy Coppice
The Pig Pen is a smaller maze and is situated outdoors so we could see what was in front and around us but due to the nature of the freaks in the Pen, this was probably the idea. We had a few jump scares from the lively actors in this little maze. Creepy Coppice is the wooded area leading up to the next maze and was again filled with characters waiting to scare us. The calm and peace of the area was regularly shattered by random screams from the group!
Haunted House
The Haunted House uses the mock two story house of last years Havestock Manor and is erected in the middle of the park. The queue had started to bottleneck a bit by this stage but we managed to get into the maze fairly quickly. The haunted House is a very well set-out maze with some nice touches and some lively scares. There was one part of the maze which did leave some groups wondering the best way through in the complete darkness. This scene could mean that groups got a bit stacked up within the maze as previous groups struggled to work out where to go!
Cell 13
It was clear that the event was saving the best for last. This maze had all the flashing yellow lights and prison feel you would expect and once inside was very dark and very active. Despite the loud booming soundtrack throughout we could hear the screams of groups around us echoing round the maze. A great finale - lively, intense and great fun!
Considering the tough time this team would have had setting up in just 5 weeks, the event was very entertaining and certainly everyone seemed to be enjoying it. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next year if they decide to keep this location, and have more time to plan and build. Saying that, we must congratulate the hard working team who managed to pull off a well organised and enjoyable night!

Value for money was excellent however I didn't appreciate being told that I could flash the actors with my mobile phone light and then they would leave me alone when this was just not the case. Instead they just scare you even more ! NOT FUNNY PEOPLE!

Fantastic, loved the actors and the mazes. They were very good and very well thought out. Although I'm not easily scared, which kinda annoyed the actors, I thought the whole things was really good.

Terrifying. Great value for money. I'm not usually easily scared but right from the start when the actor picked on me and called my name all the way through the first maze I was scared in my own horror film not knowing what to expect shared me the most the actors where well made up and the whole thing was well set up. Would definitely go back. Would of been nice to get some pics done whilst in there or at the end to buy. Well done to the whole team great night!
