Halloween at Creswell Crags
As far as we are aware - this is the first year that Creswell Crags have hosted a Halloween themed event. The caves are a prehistoric wonder and could be the perfect location for a scary event. So how was our visit?
On arrival at the venue, we were told that we could walk around the museum whilst waiting for tour to start. We actually found this to be really interesting, but before long, our guide had arrived and gave us a helmet and head torch to wear.
After a quick safety talk where we were warned of the potential of live actors, we headed to the start of our tour. Once inside the caves we stopped several times to hear gruesome tales about the practice of shrinking heads, Witchcraft and more.
It wasn't long before we had our first encounter with an actor, stood from afar watching us. He didn’t do much to scare us, but effectively set up a spooky presence. Our tour and the stories continued with more details of our ancestors that would have lived there, as well as details of the huge cave spiders known throughout the area.
Along with some actual carvings inside the cave from years gone by, we were shown a selection of different weapons that our ancestors would have used and then got to experience the caves in the dark! Our experience ended with the guide asking if anyone had any ghost stories, (no one did) and we then descended back down to the start.
It was actually quite enjoyable as a guided tour and it was quite eerie being in the caves late at night (with lots of big spiders everywhere!) but the actor side of things was quite a let-down - there were only two actors and they didn’t actually do much. For an event to have an age rating of 13 “due to scares” we left feeling a little bewildered just by the lack of them!
