Crabble Corn Mill Halloween Special
Crabble Corn Mill is one of Dover's hidden treasures. A very old historic water mill that still works, it is a fascinating piece of machinery that hosts yearly beer festivals and various community events. Their Halloween event has enjoyed a stable popularity for the last few years, but this was our first visit to the event.
Knowing the Mill,, we knew going in that this would be no Shocktoberfest - they operate on limited budgets using enthusiastic volunteers so we weren't anticipating big budget production values or hordes of experienced actors. We were also pretty puzzled by how they were going to squeeze a scare attraction into the guts of the Mill. So with that in mind we certainly weren't expecting a lot, - therefore we were left suitably surprised!
What they have achieved is actually exceptional. The tight spaces on the floors have been crammed with fun themes, including vampires and clowns and an assortment of other horrific concepts. Each floor had a room that you go in, look around, and come back out. While that doesn't sound terribly exciting, actually doing it was great fun. The rooms really were crammed (in a good way) with lots to see with actors creeping around to give guests a fright. It actually had a charming nostalgic sense like an old-school ghost train (but minus the train).
It takes a lot to frighten us, and this certainly didn't leave us screaming with terror, but the event was providing a number of good frights. The event is really aimed at the local community, particularly those who are not likely to travel to one of the big attractions around the country. But that doesn't mean it's a poor show - the event is truly overflowing with heart and enthusiasm, and the effort that's gone into each floor really is phenomenal. It feels far more than the sum of its parts and it does provide a genuinely fun night out.
