Contagious II at Canterbury Tales - 2016
The all year round Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction usually plays host to an interactive experience where medieval guides take you on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury re-enacting Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. For the second Halloween in a row it gets a spooky makeover for four nights.
Contagious was nominated for ‘Best New Event’ at the 2016 SCAR Awards losing out to Kent neighbour and newcomer, Screamland in Margate. The 2016 Halloween season sees the event return for it’s second iteration and it doesn’t disappoint.
From the off, visitors (also referred to as victims) are herded into the dimly lit graveyard behind the historic St Margaret’s Church which dates back to the twelfth century. Here Rig & Mortis play hosts, and provide highly amusing and at times eerie entertainment whilst they assemble groups to enter the attraction. These two characters sustained the excitement and nervousness of visitors with stories and bizarre games for their own amusement. At one point they had us choosing which grave we would like following our impending doom.
Once inside the church the focus shifts to the plague where you are sent on your way with this chilling warning “If you’re feeling courageous, don’t touch any of us because we’re ALL contagious!”. You're sent off to find a cure as you work your way through the detailed and spooky medieval sets guided by spirits and ghosts. The attraction makes perfect use of its lifelike waxworks and set piece scenery, that really ramps up the anxiety with every turn.
The live actors were professional and well trained at keeping everything moving, important in an interactive setting that can sometimes slow things down (particularly if you have a really scared visitor). A mention has to be given to a lady in our group of 6 who went by the name of Ian (she and her partner seemingly swapped names for the evening) who made the walk-through even more entertaining. She was a walking disaster, calamitously knocking props off tables and jumping at each and every scare!
The scares are cleverly concealed and provide a good balance between jump scares and freak-you-out creepy stuff. All in all another successful year for the team at Contagious, particularly Rig & Mortis who deserve an Oscar for their part.
We hope to see Contagious back in 2017.
