Carnival of Crows
One of the things we love about events such as The Vault Festival, is that, amongst all the comedy, song and acrobats, you can always find something darker, and more intense. As soon as we read the write up for Carnival of Crows, we knew that, this one woman show would be right up our street!
The Vaults themselves were a perfect setting for this sinister show, with a very basic set up - effectively an empty stage with just a few props to hand. But due to the physicality and pure likability of the main character, the audience hung on every word as she spun multiple tales, that seemed to get darker and more graphic as she described her encounters with the mysterious Edward, and his macabre circus of freaks.
Aside from a few narrative voice overs and some atmospheric music, everything was performed directly by the one actor, writer and director. As such Molly Beth Morossa, should be praised for creating such an engaging performance, totally believable in the different characters she portrayed. We were also surprised at the strength of humour throughout, especially with such dark, and at times gruesome topics.
Carnival of Crows isn't a scary show in terms of jumps and effects but is a genuinely unsettling experience, beautifully delivered by a standout performance from its creator!
