The Cadies & Witchery Tours- Review
After the more serious tours of previous nights, it was time to do something a bit more lighthearted! Step forward – the Cadies and Witchery Murder and Mystery tours.
Our guide for this adventure? A highwayman called Adam Lyal who was hanged in 1811 in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. His body had lain dead and buried, until in 1985 he was resurrected from the local graveyard and trained up to guide visitors on a fun but scary trip through some of the darker parts of Edinburgh’s gruesome history!

His body had lain dead and buried, until in 1985 he was resurrected from the local graveyard and trained up to guide visitors on a fun but scary trip through some of the darker parts of Edinburgh’s gruesome history!
Accompanying us along certain paths was our official “Joomper Ooter” who kept appearing at unexpected times. Much has been said about these ghost tour actors, and their sudden startle scares really added an extra element. Most people in the group had at least 2 or 3 scares within the first half hour of setting out!
The tour continued with story after story, all told with a mixture of ghoulish humour and theatricality, culminating in an hilarious walk along Cowgate with the "Joomper Oooter" channelling his best “mad monk” while a bemused public wondered what on earth was going on!
As the tour wound back up the towards the Royal Mile, Lyal and his assistant had one real treat for us as we were led up a narrow staircase between two high buildings . With smoke belching out of a well placed smoke machine and a simple but very effective trick (that left every one startled and bewildered) the tour ended on a high and we dispersed into the night.
Having visited a number of different ghost tours over a few days, there were inevitably a couple of stories which we had already heard before. Fortunately, what made these stand out was the humorous way in which they were presented and the different spin that was put on each tale. Lyal had a remarkable grasp of the audience's attention and kept everyone entertained from beginning to end and left us all wanting more.
We really enjoyed the Witchery Tour as it was so different to the Graveyard tour we had visited the night before. The light-hearted and sometime irreverent tone is a great way to learn about the history of Edinburgh while having some fun.
