Brocksbushes Spooktacular
Brocksbushes have been running Halloween events for several years, but somehow managed to slip under our radar until 2017. Perhaps it was the new theme of Mine Shaft Thirteen that drew our attention? Amazingly - it has also drawn attention from geologists and local emergency crews who genuinely believed the story of a discovery of an abandoned mine on farmland behind the farm shop. Now that's marketing you cant buy!
The event itself is quite a simple set up. Guests are taken to the top of the site via a tractor trailer ride and are then left to make their way back, taking in many scenes including live actors, a maze through a corn field and eventually the mine shaft itself.
The trailer ride itself was more functional than scary but was used to set up the story of the event and why the miners were walking round with hessian sacks,. With the threat that anyone could be taken at any time, tensions were high through our group as we entered the “village” section. There were a number of good scares along this route as well as several impressive set pieces where we encountered several character actors who were there to advance the story.
After a while it was on to the corn field, and it took quite a long time to find our way out. There were many actors hidden throughout the field and the roar of chainsaws and the screams of guests around us punctuated the air,
Finally, after stumbling through the field we approached the mine entrance and headed into the inky darkness. This finale section was dark, claustrophobic and scary as we were attacked multiple times as we tried to find our way out. Once we had finally escaped, we were treated to one final scare that left most people running back to the car park!
We really enjoyed our visit to the event and it is clear that the team are very proud of what they have created. They clearly do not have the budget of some other events, but the enthusiasm of the actors and some clever design just goes to show that sometimes less is more.
