Ghostly Castle at Bolsover Castle
For their Halloween event, Bolsover Castle have made a number of changes across the whole site and on first arrival we were impressed to see it eerily lit up, with roaming actors entertaining the guests.
Once at the castle entrance, we had a brief intro about the event and some of the story behind it before being ushered through to the old riding school. In this first scene we managed to get some good jumpy moments which really kicked off the whole night. Here there were lots of different acts so it was worth doing it a few times to get the different experiences. That's one of the highlights of this event - you don't have to stay as a group and you're able to go around each experience as many times as you want to.
Venturing deeper, we wandered through many of the rooms and corridors that are part of the regular tour until we were directed towards the first real maze section, where we first had to be "tested" to see if we were infected. The maze itself was quite short but was well designed with narrow walk ways and strobe lighting and fog effects throughout.. The actors were very active and actually chased us a number of times! Due to the free flow nature of the event we went through this maze a number of times and it was a different experience on each visit.
After we had completed this maze we headed out of the main castle into the grounds with more actors strolling around who we interacted with on the way to the "little castle". Here, we were told that we could go and explore the castle by ourselves but to be warned that the basement had experienced "dangerous events"! Walking around the castle was quite fun especially as it generally wasn't lit so we had to rely on torches (or mobiles). It was also jumpy as we kept bumping into different people that were exploring too, as well as hearing some of the well placed sound effects based around the hauntings of the castle.
Once we had finished exploring this area we made our way to the finale. Again this was a free walking maze so we didn't have to hold on to each other unless we wanted to. There was more strobe lighting in this maze with lots of different turns and narrow walk ways. It was quite jumpy and effective but the actors felt a little tamer than the first maze, and didn't chase us this time.
Once outside again we were guided back to the main entrance and we thought the event was over. But the castle wasn't finished with us and we had a number of quick scares as we walked back. What was even better was that when we got back to the beginning we were then able to go back and do it all or some of it again if we wanted to!
The event isn't huge and isn't the scariest attraction we have visited, but is great value for money - especially as you can go round as many times as you want. It also help that at times we were walking in the dark through a supposedly genuinely haunted castle which of course is always freaky and that's before the actors started jumping out at us!
So if you are looking for something a little different to do with the family, then this may be the event for you.
