Awakeneing Pure Evil
We approached Awakening Pure Evil on Liverpool's North Dock with a mix of trepidation and excitement. Any scare attraction that advertises itself as the most terrifying maze in the North West sets a certain level of intrigue and expectation. Sure enough, the guys behind this attraction did not disappoint.
Set in the Make warehouse just outside the center of Liverpool, we were instantly greeted by a sinister clown and a grim grey monster who spent time harassing the nervously awaiting groups. The impending drum of the music and accompanying strobe that shone across the queueline gave us a sense of the intensity that was to be our journey once inside. Unlike other attractions of this nature, Awakening Pure Evil seemed to focus on submitting small groups with the average number being around seven resulting in a very intimate feeling experience.
Themed around the notion that clowns have taken over the abandoned warehouse, we were impressed with how this storyline unfolded throughout the maze. There were approximately five key points in which we were stopped and the story further explained. The actors used this time very well to ensure each guest feels closer to the action and that the intensity never subsides. All guests were interacted with at each stage, with the screams from our group deafening out the music at times. Whilst traveling between the sections, the team have devised routes that allow actors from previous points to easily interact again, allowing for multiple and sometimes very unexpected jump scares. There is certainly no way to avoid the scares in this attraction.
The attraction uses the space well to create a true feeling of isolation. Whilst theming is limited and it felt at times as though the blue fencing and sheets detracted from the experience a little, what is used is done very well within the rooms. We particularly enjoyed the finale rooms and strobe maze chase which truly created a sense of panic as the exit was not clear and the chainsaw did not subside.
We look forward to seeing what the team behind this haunt come up with next year.
