American Werewolf in London Bridge Experience
When you own something that’s recently been voted “The Scariest Attraction in the UK” do you sit back on your laurels and let the award speak for itself or do you look to try and do something a little different? Well for the owners of the London Bridge Experience and the London Tombs, the decision was simple and this weekend saw the launch of their latest show – an American Werewolve in London Bridge Experience.
For three nights only, the regular London Bridge Experience tour was turned on its head as a pack of hungry werewolves invaded the building causing havoc wherever they went. For anyone familiar with the whole attraction, the show starts off in the usual manner but before long before chaos breaks out and some of the regular show actors get caught up in the horror of the werewolves
In fact it was in this “first half” of the show, that American Werewolves really excelled. We were fortunate to be accompanied by the maliciously beautiful Esmerelda (made famous at Alton Towers over recent years) and as usual her performance was filled with the loathing and contempt for the “pitiful” guests she was guiding
Reports have been that both guides were particularly strong in their characterisations, which therefore made it even more impressive, once hell breaks loose and the pretence is dropped. In a very clever twist, the forth wall is broken and we watch a frustrated terrified actor trying to get out which helped to increase the anxiety in the group we were in. At this point what was real and what was pretend? No one could be 100% certain and many of the upstairs scenarios cleverly played with this scenario
Obviously before too long, we are pushed down into the Tombs for our only route of escape and here the full gamut of scare tactics are thrown at us including an impressive array of actors, midgets and werewolves that just seemed to appear from nowhere
By this point though, with no chance to tell the further story, the Werewolf version of the Tombs is more of the usual. This in no way lessens the experience as the Tombs have always been a manic experience and the apparent extra actors meant there were no dead spots through the whole route
In an interesting note we found some of the rooms to be lighter than when we had experienced them before. This may have been deliberate to keep up the through put but in a few places we could see the actors hiding places lit up more than usual. It is difficult though – as having worked the space 2 weeks previously us guys know the layout of the maze like the back of our hands and so perhaps we were looking for things. Even so the rest of our party were screaming throughout and we had some very effective scares and startles (especially the unique hiding place in the Big Squeeze Claustrophobia room
With the shortened upstairs experience due to the “interruptions” of the werewolves, the whole attraction probably plays out in about 40 minutes or so, which works perfectly with the increased scares throughout. It was certainly popular as well. It appears that visitor numbers were higher than usual which bodes well for future special events. In fact the team behind this are already looking at a brand new show for the upcoming Halloween season
