Amsterdam Dungeon
The Merlin owned Dungeon attractions have become increasingly popular in the UK and around the world with branches in Berlin and Amsterdam, soon to be joined by San Francisco. With the relocation and relaunch of their flagship show in London in March 2013, new branding was rolled out across all venues. Having visited and reviewed all of the UK shows, we set off for Holland to discover the Amsterdam Dungeon.
We entered the Dungeon and awaited in anticipation to meet ‘The Gate Keeper’. The anticipation was less of trepidation but more about how the show would work in a foreign country. Would the language difference be a barrier to enjoying the show. Fortunately we didn't need to worry! Throughout the ten shows each and every actor spoke at least four different languages whilst performing their sickening and nauseating scenes. At no point was anyone confused over the story being played out or the instructions about where to go or what to do next. The balance of language used within the Amsterdam Dungeon was executed to perfection to ensure every customer was satisfied (as well as terrified) with their experience.
Terrified isn’t a word that’s commonly used when describing a Dungeon attraction, yet the Amsterdam incarnation appears to take a far darker and sinister approach. With actors getting that little bit closer, sets being that little bit darker and a noticeable amount of impact scares compared to our UK Dungeon attractions.
Although we were in a foreign country, there were still many scenes close to home. Scenes such as ‘The Torturer’ and ‘Witches’ were reminiscent of scenes we would see at out UK attractions. However there were things we hadn't seen before and this were the ones that stood out. One that needs a particular mention is ‘Hell on Batavia’. Beneath the deck of a sailing pirate ship is where we were left both breathless from fear yet amazed of the beauty of the scenography. The choreographed scene proved to be one of the best we have seen at any of the Dungeons in the UK and abroad!
Rides have become more prominent in recent years with UK based Dungeons. With the EXTREMIS, oops sorry, DROP DEAD Drop Tower rides, boat rides and the short lived Vengeance 4-D experience. Amsterdam adopted a similar gimmick in the form of a mini rollercoaster. Although a rather lack-lustre ride, it had just the right amount of punch to end the Dungeon experience on a high.
