Scare Rooms at Alton Towers
We have always taken the opportunity to book into an Alton Towers scare room each year and with 2013 promising to be bigger and better than before, this year was no exception. With a costly supplement, we were keen to know whether the price would be worth it: fortunately we got every pennies worth from the experience.
Before arriving we received an invite to the wedding of a certain Mary Miller and Caleb Winkles and not knowing who these characters were, we were excited to find out. The check in area was different from previous years; it was separate to the Alton Towers Hotel and had a designated corridor where guests were checked in by the very excited bride herself. We were taken to our rooms which were themed the same as last year’s Altonville Hotel hinting that if you had stayed in a scare room last year, the story would continue. We were asked to meet in the corridor at a certain time and we were taken to a stunning outdoor location, which was decorated like a real wedding reception. Drinks and food were available and the food included in the cost of the scare room was of a high standard which everyone enjoyed. During the reception, characters worked brilliantly, interacting with all the guests and building up a story. During the outdoor experience we were joined by several new characters including a wedding singer so talented and convincing, that at times we believed we were actually at a wedding! The whole thing was an elaborate theatrical style performance that despite having no real scares, left us completely immersed in the story and nervous about what might happen later. Soon, at the bride and grooms request, we were led back to our rooms to rest after a "busy evening".
As guests in a scare room we were treated to several new release horror movies, a nice added bonus, so we put one one and settled down in anticipation of what the rest of the evening would entail.
It wasn't long before we had characters coming into our room, building upon the story from previous years. For us there were lots of little details that tied in with last years experience but any new guests would not have been at a disadvantage. It then seemed that from this point on we were rarely left alone in our room and with the exception of the infamous shower scene, we were treated to some innovative scares which left us running around the room terrified.
The scare rooms should be commended for never standing still and being complacent with what they have done in previous years. This year we had some very cleverly executed scares which stunned and scared even our party of hardened scare attraction visitors. The actors used throughout were enthusiastic, talented and had developed their characters so well that they warranted empathy and commanded fear. At times we felt drawn into the story and provided a running commentary throughout the night ourselves! The small details such as a changing photograph in the corridor showed the teams’ commitment and passion to making the experience successful for guests. Unlike last year, the scares weren't cut short and carried on right up until the promised 2am finish. Yet again, the finale was one that didn't disappoint, leaving us in a heap on the bed with chaos strewn throughout the entire room!
The scare rooms are a magnificent addition to the Scarefest line up and are enjoyed each and every year by all who experience them, we hope that they continue into 2014 and beyond!

We visited this year with the knowledge of last years rooms. Which helped a lot as it was a type of follow on from that in this years theme ( although I don't think it would effect the atmosphere or story if you hadn't been the previous year) the difference this year is that we entered through our very own special entrance rather than like last year through the hotel.
Once we'd got ourselves ready it was time for the big wedding and our meal. The meal was nice but some of our party didn't enjoy it. And I think compared to the previous years meal it wasn't as good. But still enjoyable in its own rights.
After the wedding we went back to our room for a " quiet nights sleep" and that's when the real fun begins!
I think this year they have really excelled with what they do. There was much more intense frights than last year, and I think because you was outdoors a little longer the story of it unfolded before getting back to the rooms giving scape for the scares to begin almost instantly. I've never been as scared in my life as I was at one part in there!! Would give this years a 10/10.
