Preview - Goosebumps Alive
Anyone of a certain age will recognise the Goosebumps brand. Starting out as a series of children's horror stories by RL Stine, the books were soon followed by a successfully scary tv series. The brand celebrated the fact that children love being scared, and the stories held a mix of terrifying monsters, and laugh out loud moments. As kids we might have had nightmares but we couldn't stop reading and watching!
Goosebumps really was a classic of the time, and so when it was first announced that it was being made into a live show, we were really excited to see what they could do with our beloved books. The problem is - as adults - would we still find it scary? But with a kids version in production, as well as the main show having an age restriction, it would seem that our fears would be unfounded.
At a special preview event a few weeks before opening, we were given a very exclusive chance to have a look at the attraction being built, check out some concept and design images as well as having the opportunity to talk to Tom Saloman, the producer of the show.
"We plan to make this show dark, scary and fun" says Tom " We want to take all the elements of the classic Goosebumps story, but play with them for an adult audience. We are going to take our visitors on a high energy experience that will leave them screaming with fright one minute and laughing the next"
The attraction is currently being built in the atmospheric Vaults venue under Waterloo station and we had a tour of some of of the sets under construction. It is clear that the show contains some really varied scenes, ranging from an impressively huge corn field which will be populated with terrifying scarecrow creatures, to smaller more intimate scenes such as the inside of a tent during a camp out.
It is in this tent that we were invited to sit down and experience one whole scene from the show. As the crickets chirped and strange noises filled the night, a tale of terror played out before us. The performance was excellent and helped build up the tension. So much so that in the final jump scare, we genuinely let out a startled scream! Embarrassingly, as we left the tent, Tom was stood outside and laughing at our reaction - "well if we made you scream with that little scene - just you wait till you see what we do during the whole show"
Back in the bar we had chance to get a closer look at some of the props and masks that are being used in the production. The masks have been created by The Ministry of Masks and are really detailed (and comfortable to wear!) On the walls, the concept artwork and mood boards hint at the true horrors that will be waiting for those who dare to enter. The pictures below just give a tiny hint as to what is being built and there are loads more scenes that were hidden away behind closed doors that we weren't able to see.
Having visited this preview, it is clear that there is a very talented and enthusiastic team behind this incredible show. They all have a drive and passion to produce something that is going to scare and entertain us, and we can't wait to see the final show when it is opens on April 6th
