Labyrinth at Notts Maze- Halloween 2021
After pulling up in the car to Notts maze, we thought we would be sensible and change into wellies as it could be muddy. Before we even had chance to say anything, our car door was being flung open by clowns and creatures! They vanished off into the night as quickly as they appeared but it was a great start to the night.
And the scares didn't stop there as a quick toilet stop turned into another encounter with the same creatures. While a clown toyed with one of us outside, a demonic creature attacked my porta loo! After escaping from these, we made our way down to get our briefing. The challenge was to find 11 runes so that we could work out a word to win a prize. They are spread across both the labyrinth & the village. Once we knew what to do we made our way to the first maze.
Set inside a corn field, with only the moonlight to guide you through, it was very eerie and quite a challenge to find our letters for the word search. Inside the maze were creatures lurking in the dark. From scarecrows & werewolves to clowns and the demonic ringmaster, we never knew what to expect around each corner. We even encountered a bike riding demonic creature! Not necessarily sure they have bicycles in hell - but they were a great character! Of course - being a real maze, the search for the clues is quite hard and we sometimes literally were going round and round in circles, with the darkness making it even harder. After finding as many runes as we could we decided to go onto the next maze.
The Village has been abandoned, or so they say. Within it are mysterious dwellers of the night that have been there for sometime and don't like visitors. Led by a path of candles into the dark forest, we soon found our way to the village. The floor was uneven, the dark was thick and we could only see what they wanted us to see!
Noises around us would indicate movement and along the route we were stalked by more demonic looking people lunging at us, making us feel as though we were about to be sacrificed at any moment! The sets themselves were simple and yet very effective in enhancing the story and providing some hiding places for the creatures. As we wearily made our way around, all while looking for the remaining runes we didn’t know what to expect and even the bravest of us got a good fright or two. As it came to an end we were treated to a big finale which was fantastic, original and something that we hadn’t personally seen before!
Having come to Notts maze last year we have to say they have really upped there game immensely. The actors throughout were really lively and enthusiastic and the addition of the Village has really made this a destination worth visiting.

Labyrinth at Notts Maze - 2020
Before we arrived at The Labyrinth we were told that we would need to wear wellies. They really weren't wrong - but it was nice to see an event recognise, and pre-warn guests that it could be muddy, as opposed to turning up unexpected.
On arrival, on a very wet Saturday, we were met by a group of guides and given a quick briefing - a group of inmates had escaped from Darlington Prison and the army had detained them all inside the cornfield. They therefore needed our Civilian help as the inmates were not behaving, and we were tasked with trying to find them.
We entered the maze, which was an 8ft towering cornfield covering over 12 acres of land. It really was so dark, and muddy, that we were thankful for the wellies, but it all added to the experience!
We were trying to follow the map but everywhere in the maze looked the same. Then out of nowhere we were faced with an inmate, who was taunting us and laughing at our disoriented state. We turned a few corners and were met with another inmate, this time with an axe in their hand! They were starting to come out of nowhere in the thickest of night, taking us completely by surprise.
We hurried down a trail, only to be met with a dead end, and laughter that spelt out our misfortune. Our guide lit the way with a torch and we managed to stumble out into an open space, only to be met with 4 or 5 inmates all coming quickly to us. They teased us by taking our map, and the the torch, and left us to get out unaided. After a lot of dead ends, more inmates and a few unexpected surprises we eventfully made it to safety outside the maze!
In summary, we cannot emphasise just how perfect this setting is, as the corn towers over you and gives lots of tight spaces, allowing for actors to easily move through with no sight. We felt it could have had a slight more story flowing through and a big finale would have ended it perfectly, but as a whole, we got some really good scares and loved the whole concept and execution.
