The Acid Bath Murderer Experience - Review
Question: When is an escape room not actually an escape room? The answer? - When it is a true crime, edutainment, scare experience, combining escape game challenges, cinematic moments and special effects! So yes - that's a pretty big mouthful but it does really sum up everything about the Acid Bath Murderer Experience that has just opened at Hounds in Crawley.
Based on historical true events, guests are invited through different rooms and stages of a serial killer's life, learning more about his hideous crimes and what led to his ultimate capture and execution. Each room has a number of puzzles and escape room elements, that help move the story along but you don't necessarily have to "escape" each room to progress. Therefore, regardless of their problem solving abilities, all guests will get to proceed through the whole story and enjoy everything.
And although we say "enjoy"there are many things that the easily scared would hate about this experience. There really are plenty of jumps throughout, and even seasoned visitors like us were screaming in the dark at times! These are created by a mixture of tactics including sudden effects and sudden appearances from our host and guide for the whole experience.
The puzzles themselves are a great mix of locks and props and utilise a number of different tactics throughout. Although we have said that completion of the puzzles is not essential to do the whole experience they really do add to the achievement and by the time we reached the finale we had just 2 story tokens left to recover (not all were based in puzzles - so it was quite easy that we missed these ones whilst traversing the rooms)
The episodic nature of the experience in different rooms really reminded us of a Dungeons style promenade show (but with added escape room elements.) By the time we get to the incredibly impressive audio visual finale, we had experienced multiple rooms, an engaging narrative and of course a number of fun puzzles and scares.
All in - The Acid Bath Murderer Experience is like no other escape room we have done (which is why we are effectively trying hard NOT to call it an escape room!) With the quality of acting, alongside the attention to detail in the sets (even including parts of the Blackadder set in the court room)- it really is a hugely elaborate multi faceted experience, that needs to be seen to be believed. Whether you are a scare fan, escape room fan or just fancy a fully immersive and entertaining night out - we can highly recommend a visit!
