Halloween at Hellfire Caves 2023
The Hellfire caves in West Wycombe is a suitably creepy location at the best of times. Originally excavated between around 1750, they were used as a meeting place for the infamous Hellfire Club. The club motto was “Do what thou wilt”, and club activities included illicit activities including sex parties, drinking, wenching, and mock rituals. A local legend claims that the caves are haunted by Sukie, a young maid who was accidentally killed by people playing a practical joke on her. Others claim that the ghost of Paul Whitehead, the former steward of the Hell Fire Club, has been seen in the caves.
So to enter such real caves with narrow winding tunnels is enough to scare you for a start, let alone for an event called The Curse of the Dark Depths! Despite entering as a small group, we were frequently on our own in the tunnels and and were taunted by multiple actors. It sounds simple when written down by the sudden periods of pure darkness created just by suddenly turning the lights off, meant we were on completely on edge all night. As a stand alone experience, in this incredible setting, this event was genuinely terrifying.
The actors were all so lively in every scene. They came out from under tables, out of walls and stood menacingly at the end of tunnels. At one point we heard this loud stomping sound as a hulking "6 foot something" actor came growling round the corner, leaving one of our party on the floor!
The whole experience is so different from your "haunted house" style scare maze. It doesn't help that we were literally left to wander about with no idea of how to get out, and this was the first time in a very long time, that we felt like we may not actually make it home!
As you can see, we had a great time at Hellfire Caves and the Halloween event was a was a real stand out experience for the team. Well done to all involved!
