Escape Room Puzzles - James Hamer-Morton
As you know, we don't usually review books, but in this time of lockdown, we reached onto our book shelf to try and beat the boredom and finally complete a set of puzzles we had been struggling with for some time.
The book, Escape Room Puzzles was published in 2018, and was written by the owner and creator of Deadlocked Escape Rooms in Reading. Unlike a general puzzle compendium, this volume tells one story from start to finish as you play an investigative journalist, trying to piece together a global threat.
The book is divided into "rooms" and you are encouraged to read each chapter fully, to start working out what you need to do to escape. We found this a lot like a real escape room experience, as we bounced backwards and forwards exploring the "room" trying to put the clues together and solve each puzzle and escape.
The first few rooms were fun and intriguing, and we managed to escape with little or no hints, but towards the end, we absolutely relied on the clue system to help us out, as there were some puzzles we genuinely struggled to picture off the page. This is because some of the puzzles were more suited to practical activities, where you could touch and manipulate the props. You can cut some of the pages out the book, but we tried to protect the integrity of our purchase!
But never fear - there were always clues available and you always have the choice of how easy or hard you want that clue to be. If totally stuck - the answers are also provided with a full detailed breakdown.
We must be honest - we found the book quite tough and it often left us completely baffled on the puzzles. We are not sure how many times we had to go to the back for help, so our overall escape time was pretty shocking! But saying that - we were really impressed with the work and thought that went into this book and it was the perfect antidote to sitting around the house doing nothing!
Escape Room Puzzles should be available from most online retailers.
