Mission Astra by Clue HQ
It's about week 12 of lockdown. All the escape rooms are still closed, and so we are continuing our quest to keep our brains active, by trialling as many virtual and play at home escape rooms we can find.
Clue HQ are a national chain with over 15 escape room venues around the UK, and while these are all closed, they have come up with a series of play at home games entitled "The Hunt for the Clueminati." Although these can all be played separately they do form part of an over-riding story and as such we jumped into the first game - Mission Astra.
Unlike other virtual games - there is no live host or video stream - everything is achieved by 4 players logged into different devices, and players communicating via telephone conferencing such as Zoom or Teams.
This gave us some flexibility to split up and solve different puzzles, but unlike some games we have played, a success by one player unlocks the next screens on all devices. This meant we didn't have to all share and input the same passwords etc to get to the next part of the game. This also meant we could progress quicker than playing each game consecutively.
Another thing to mention - is just the sheer amount of information and places there are to look throughout this game. At times it was akin to being a detective in a murder case, as we were searching through files and seemingly random pages, looking for the clues!
Fortunately, the formats required for each puzzle were clear, so we knew what we were looking and each puzzle had three levels of hints as well as a "give me the answer " button in case we were really stuck. The puzzles themselves although not mind crushingly difficult, were all quite time consuming to complete. Even once solving a code pattern or sequence, it would then take some time to actually translate that into the required answers. Each game and puzzle Is presented through a mixture of videos, sounds and visual clues and the variety in each game adds to the immersion of the whole experience.
The game is scheduled to last between 1 and 2 hours and we smashed it in one hours 19 mins which we didn't find too shabby. When we submitted our answer we were treated to a final video explaining all of the clues that had led to the result, and although we got the answer right - even we missed some key clues along the way!
So if you are looking for a fun but interesting game , we can definitely recommend these games from Clue HQ, and at only £15 per team, they are pretty reasonably priced.
