Clown House Nottingham - Review
Clown House Nottingham, set inside the Pirate Play area, is a unique and high energy event from a new production team.
The children’s play centre hosts four floors of fun with two different slides, ball pools, tight spaces and climbing equipment. This is a one-of-a-kind play centre, as not only do they open their doors to children, but adults too can book parties and relive their childhood (they even serve alcohol!) But this Halloween something has gone wrong. The play centre has been overtaken by clowns, and they are there to cause mischief and mayhem throughout the building.
On arrival we were greeted by a joker who showed us to our seats and told us we had a 45-minute slot. The room was darkly lit only by some disco lights, but the atmosphere was electric. A short while later, an airhorn was blown signaling that it was our time to enter.
We eagerly ran across to the play area, all the memories of our childhood coming back as we dived into the ball pool. As we were making our way out, up a rope ladder, we were greeted by our first clown. He appeared out of nowhere yet was straight in our face taunting us. We made it to the top of the ladder (realising that that took more effort that we had expected) and started to make our way through the dark maze.
As we went around we were met by different clowns at every bend. The actors were fast and energetic, and weaving between the mazes we were poked, prodded, tickled and grabbed at every opportunity.
Dashing about a children’s play centre as an adult, takes its toll and we soon realised we aren’t quite as energetic as we might like to think we are. We went into hiding to take a breath, but all too soon we were surrounded by five clowns - each terrifying in their own way. With no way to escape we ended up crawling through a gap and diving down the slide thinking we would escape. How wrong we were! With a clown coming down behind us and one waiting at the bottom we just couldn’t escape them. The chase seemed to go on forever until suddenly the airhorn sounded, to signal the end of our session.
We breathed a sigh of relief. Running around a play centre certainly gets you breathless, and it didn’t help being chased by chaotic, terrifying clowns. This really wasn’t the childhood experience that we remember – this truly was like something out of a nightmare!
Clown house Nottingham is running a series of nights through October all in 45-minute slots. With groups of around 10-15 people the atmosphere is great, but is small enough to get the personal one to one treatment from the clowns! For its first year running we were very impressed with the organisation, and cant wait to see what this team come up with next.
