Sick to Death - Review
Sick to Death is a unique museum that tells the gory history of disease and medicine, through the use of interactive exhibits and displays. It is based in a beautiful old church in the centre of historic Chester, and the setting just adds to the atmosphere of the place.
Although not a scare attraction in any way, we found it a fascinating place to visit and the issues regarding widespread pandemics certainly ring true in these post Covid times. Let’s face it – all of us are old enough to remember the recent pandemic!
Touching is positively encouraged throughout the museum with so many drawers and doors to open, you could easily spend ages just taking in all the anecdotes and stories. Who knew that Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were allegedly created as an antidote to excessive masturbation?
Talking of sexual health, there is a little curtained off section, covering sexual diseases. Viewer discretion is advised here – as there are some VERY graphic scenes behind some of the flaps (no pun intended!)
There are also some graphic scenes of an autopsy, with a fascinating pathologist style quiz via a screen that encourages you to really pull the bits out and look for particular signs of disease.
Like any museum, the length of time required to visit this attraction will depend on how much you want to read the subjects and participate in the quizzes, and whether you engage with the live actor. We were encouraged to make our own pomade of herbs to defeat the Black Plague before we left. We’re not sure if what we made would protect us from disease, but the foul-smelling bag would certainly keep people away from getting too close to us!
We really enjoyed our visit to this museum and would definitely recommend it when visiting Chester. If you like your disease and medicine to be a bit more graphic and detailed than a standard Dungeon’s style show – then this is the place for you!
