Scream Time at Margam Castle - Review 2025

After last year’s visit to Fright Nights, we were really curious to see what had changed now that it’s been rebranded as Scream Time at Margam Castle. Straight away you can tell the organisers have been busy. The whole thing feels more thought out and polished from the moment you arrive.

The entrance sets the tone perfectly this time. There’s new signage, strong lighting, and a soundtrack that actually builds some tension before you even hit the trail. The castle itself still steals the show visually – it’s one of the best settings for a Halloween event in South Wales.

The biggest change is the layout. The village section has been moved to the start instead of the end, and that simple change makes a huge difference. It feels like a proper warm-up now, with fairground rides, food stalls, axe throwing and marshmallow roasting getting you in the mood before the scares begin. You can head back there later too, which makes the flow of the night a lot smoother.

The trail itself follows a similar route to last year with plenty of static props, moody lighting and background audio, but the difference was in the energy! The roaming actors were much stronger this time around. They had great timing, got right in people’s faces when they needed to, and gave some genuine jump scares. It’s still not completely packed with actors, but the moments that landed really hit.

Inside the castle, the whole experience has been redesigned into more of a maze format. The fenced corridors, hanging drapes and narrow turns make it feel tighter and more enclosed. It’s darker, moodier and definitely an improvement in atmosphere. The team have created proper characters this year rather than throwing in random monsters, and it feels far more cohesive as a result. That said, it could have done with a few more live performers to keep the energy up, and it felt a little shorter than expected. The iconic staircase scene is still there though with incredible positioned lighting to really enhance the magnificence of the building itself.

The exit trail had a few more actors than last time which is good to see, but the lighting worked against them. It was just too bright, so you could easily spot where people were hiding or waiting to jump. When you can see it coming, it loses impact, which is a shame because their enthusiasm was great.

Overall, Scream Time is a solid step up from last year. It feels more structured, more atmospheric, and more confident in what it’s trying to be. The event looks great, sounds great, and the cast that were out there really gave it their all. It’s not an extreme horror experience, but as a scare enthusiast I genuinely appreciated the improvements. With a few more actors, better timing, and some tweaks to the lighting, this could easily become one of the strongest Halloween nights out in South Wales.

Fright Nights at Margam Castle - Review 2024

Margam Castle is an impressive estate and park just off the M4 in Port Talbot and makes a fantastic backdrop for a new Halloween event - Fright Nights.

The main trail is used for family friendly frights during the afternoon and early evening, before turning into the adult only event later in the night. And this dual approach is very clear as many of the scenes along the trail are clearly designed for a younger audience. They are fun to look at - but are clearly not scary.

Therefore it is a good job that there are a number of scare actors scattered round the trail. But this is probably the event's failing - there are just NOT enough scare actors along the pathways, to make the whole attraction super scary. Yes they managed to get a number of quick startle scares, but we spent a LOT of our time just walking through the scenery enjoying the lights and props.

But the highlight was the approach and entrance to the main house itself, which was beautifully lit up and sat ominously waiting at the top of the hill. Once inside - this section had a great number of impressive scares, and as we waited outside, the area was filled with the screams of guests ahead of us. The short walk through the castle and its outbuildings was clearly the highlight of the event and we would love to have seen this intensity across the whole trail.

Once outside the house, there is a break area with catering and rides, and if it hadn't been raining on our visit, we would have certainly dwelled in this area longer. But as we started the route back to the car park, we were hoping that the scares would continue and this was the biggest disappointment of the night. The long route down the hill had virtually nothing to keep us interested. Granted there were a few props and some fun lighting effects, but we only counted one actor on the 15 minute walk down.  Granted they gave us a great scare (you can hear us scream in the video below).but the second half of the show should have been more impactful, and just left us walking to the car feeling "Was that it?"

So all in - Fright Nights at Margam Castle was a mixed bag. We genuinely loved the route through the main buildings in the middle of the show, and loved the effects and lighting on the main trail, but think a few more actors along the outdoor paths would make this an outstanding event.
