Paranormal Activity: The Play - Review
Based on Oren Pell's original Hollywood movie, Leeds Playhouse has seen the World premiere of Paranormal Activity, which with the current demand for horror in theatre, looks set for a West End transfer or UK tour very soon.
Written by Levi Holloway and directed by Felix Barrett (of Punchdrunk fame), the audience are requested from the start to keep the mysteries a secret and not spoil it for others, so we will have to be very careful with what we say here.
It's no secret that the play revolves around a different couple from the original movie, and sees James and Lou move from Chicago to start a new life in London. Are they fleeing from something traumatic over the pond, or is the truth closer to home? All is revealed rather insidiously throughout the duration of the show.
The set and staging of this show is suitably impressive with atmospheric lighting, fantastic sound design and of course a good number of truly terrifying jump scares. The two leads are totally convincing as a couple slowly unravelling through dark secrets and lies, and at times, leave you questioning the true nature of demonic possession. Is it the house that is haunted or the people?
From start to finish we were thoroughly captivated. In fact the show was so engaging that it doesn't really need the attachment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, and could easily go under a different name and still impress. It was intelligent, witty and mind blowing, and everything worked collectively to deliver an almost impossible brief to match and exceed the atmosphere of the original movie. Definitely see this if you love to be spooked.
