Hidden Evidence - a Murder Mystery at London Dungeon
Fever UK is a promoter of immersive pop-up events across the country and are very active in London, where their site lists a whole array of different events across the Capital.
Hidden Evidence was advertised as a murder mystery experience in the London Dungeon, and although using the rooms and character designs of the classic attraction, it is a completely standalone event, and all actors have been hired in for the event.
So, with a chance to see the London Dungeon in a different light we went along on opening tonight to see if we could work out “who-dunnit”
The concept for the show should have been quite simple. The duty manager of the Dungeon had been murdered, and we were there to interrogate the suspects and solve the murder. The suspects were all the “actors” playing the iconic Dungeon characters, so instead of interviewing Mrs Lovett, we effectively quizzed "Cressida", the actor behind the role. We understood this completely, but a few members of the public had trouble distinguishing the actor from the character.
For example questions about the Seven Bells Tavern in what would normally be the Jack the Ripper scene, were whether this was the bar the victim had been drinking in. The actor was like “not of course not – this is just a set”. For those in on the gag – it was very clever, but perhaps more should have been made of this at the start. After all– we had to remind people several times that these were actors portraying actors who usually play a Dungeon character.
After meeting five different characters from iconic scenes such as The Plague Doctor the Judge, and experiencing a number of quick jump scares along the way we were able to question each one about their motives. We then had a few minutes to confer as a group to come up with the murderer and their methods, which we were then required to act out to the other groups!
We obviously cant reveal the results but we were closest to the truth, and as the secrets were laid out – all the actors engaged with us around the tavern area, staying in their “actor” character. Once the whole story was revealed, the tavern at the Dungeons was opened for people to buy a celebratory or commiseration drink.
We genuinely enjoyed the show, as it was a completely different way to experience the Dungeon and we loved the very meta narrative that had actors playing actors who we also saw as their Dungeon characters. But this could have been made a bit clearer from the start, as there were definitely a few people struggling with this narrative.
But, as chance to see the Dungeon rooms and sets in such a different light – we really enjoyed Hidden Evidence and hope the team have a successful run through Halloween. In the meantime we will back at the Dungeon soon for their new Blackout experience for Halloween!
