Deva After Dark - Review
The Deva Roman Experience is Dungeon’s style historical recreation of the sight and sounds of the roman settlement in Chester (then called Deva). The main attraction has eight actor led scenes leading up to the reveal of actual Roman ruins in the basement of the attraction.
On select nights through the years, the attraction hosts its “scarier” version, which follows the main scenes in order but adds a lot more adult content to the mix. (If you’re offended by swearing then this probably isn’t for you.)
Before entering we were given a a tasty cocktail of vodka mixed with one of the fantastic Potions Cauldron fruit drinks. Once our time was called – we downed our drinks and headed in.
What then ensued was a rude, and graphic tour through the history of Deva, with the focus remaining mostly on the history. The humour was bawdy throughout – especially when the gates to the city were jammed and a man appeared from nowhere shouting “I’ll get it – I love smashing back doors in!
The early scenes were less about scares and focussed more on jokes and history, but a scene in the basement soon changed the mood with a fun show that utilised the old trope of complete darkness and sudden appearances. Although it’s a gag that is used a lot in Dungeon attractions, when done as well, as it was here – it still succeeds in making people jump.
Once back upstairs we were given eye masks and told to follow the rope one at time as we stumbled into the unknown. This is where the majority of the scares came from, with the room filled with ominous music and actors grabbing and touching us from all directions. It was a great finale to a fun tour and certainly left us on a high.
For a quick makeover of the original show, we really enjoyed the ingenuity and effort that had gone into creating After Dark. There is no real time between the educational daytime tours and the After Dark experience, so for the event to have a such a different feel with new scripts, new scenes and effects throughout, is praise to the creative team.
In Summary – we had a great time, and we look forward to visiting again sometime in the future.
